• Display What is concrete?

  Concrete is a composite material of gravel and sand bound together with Portland cement. At Jack Buckland Paving, we use fiber-reinforced concrete that includes tiny fibers that increase the product’s strength.

• Display How is concrete poured?

  While each job may feature slight variations in process, the general procedure for pouring concrete is:

  Grading

  We use special earthmoving equipment to create a smooth base for paving correctly sloped for drainage and graded to provide consistent, eased curves and elevation changes.

  Forming

  Our team will build “formers” or “forms,” a wooden framework that will contain the wet concrete in place until it has dried and the forms can be removed.

  Sterilization

  To deter plant life from trying to take root in or break through your concrete, we apply an herbicide to the subsoil to kill any existing plant life and impede future growth.

  Pouring

  We’ll pour the concrete, spreading it evenly and not leaving any voids or bubbles. We’ll use a vibrating “float” to force any hidden voids to the surface.

  Surfacing

  We smooth and skim the concrete to ensure a solid, quality surface with no voids. We’ll then sweep the surface to create a high traction “broom finish.”

  Form Removal and Backfilling

  We’ll return to remove the forms once your concrete is dry (usually 3-4 days). We’ll then use dirt from the grading process to backfill the surrounding landscape to the same level as the concrete. That way, you will only see a clean, laser-straight edge – and if an errant tire rolls off your driveway, it will transition smoothly to the surrounding dirt or grass without tearing up the edge.

• Display How long does concrete last?

  When properly maintained, a single application of concrete can last for 15-20 years before it needs to be replaced or resurfaced.

• Display How soon can I use my paved surface once construction is complete?

  A concrete pour will typically need to cure for at least 72 hours. Total curing time will depend on the weather, with warmer temps providing the fastest curing times.

  We do not advise pouring concrete in extreme temperatures, as temperatures above or below the ideal curing temperature for Portland cement will lead to a substandard product.
